95th Squadron 2009 Fly-In

On Saturday, Oct. 3, the 95th Squadron held its Annual Fly-in at its flying field in Gaston, NC. Although the weather prediction was for rain, the day dawned warm and sunny, with a moderate breeze right down the runway. Thirty-eight pilots from Clubs throughout the North Carolina and Virginia areas registered for the AMA sanctioned event and enjoyed a beautiful day of flying to the delight of many enthusiastic spectators. CD Alan Arthur kept things organized and safe throughout the day as pilots filled the sky to demonstrate their skills. This was a “fly what you brung” event, and nearly every genre was represented. Highlights included Outlaw demonstrations, plenty of 3D demos, a couple flights by 2008/2009 Mr. Top Gun David Hayes of his Thrush crop duster, and two amazing and fast flights of a scale jet. Ten electric T-28s also took to the air in what began as formation flying but ended with dog fights to see who could out fly and out last. Many will require some significant repairs before returning to the sky. During the lunch break, pilots and spectators enjoyed a fantastic BBQ lunch provided by Bullseye Cookers out of Bracey, Va., while two local pilots provided entertainment with several low fly-bys in their full scale Cessna and Super Cub. Special events included candy drops for the kids, and an opportunity for stick time on a buddy box flying the Club’s trainer, which several spectators took advantage of. A special thanks to the folks at East RC Hobbies in Zebulon, NC who came and flew in the event, and donated several items for our prize raffle. The event lasted well beyond the advertised 4 p.m. end time as pilots simply refused to give up on a fantastic day of flying. Our thanks to all the folks who came many miles to spend a wonderful day of flying with the 95th.
